Hidden text in a Word doc makes Claude Cowork upload your private files to an attacker: why it is not safe to use

What happened

Days after Anthropic released Claude Cowork in early testing (January 12, 2026), a security firm showed a trick. Someone hid instructions inside a Word document by making the text tiny, white on a white background, and squeezed together, so a person cannot see it. When Cowork read the file, it quietly followed those hidden orders. It picked the largest file on the computer and uploaded it to a stranger's account. In the demo, that file was a mortgage document with financial details and part of a Social Security number. No approval was requested at any point, and two different Claude models fell for it. A separate researcher had warned Anthropic about the underlying upload path back in October 2025, before Cowork shipped.

What it means for you

An AI agent that reads your files can be tricked by content it reads. A document, email, or web page can carry hidden commands the agent obeys as if they came from you. You may never see it happen.

What to do instead

• Do not feed unknown documents or 'skills' from strangers to an AI agent.
• Prefer tools that ask before uploading or sending anything.
• Keep sensitive files out of folders your agent can reach.
